Article 16, Constitution of India


Article 16 of the Constitution of India guarantees equality of opportunity in matters of public employment. It ensures that no citizen is discriminated against on grounds such as religion, race, caste, sex, descent, place of birth, or residence. The Article permits the State to make provisions for reservation in favor of backward classes, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes to promote social justice. It also allows certain exceptions, such as residence requirements for specific posts. Overall, Article 16 aims to create a fair and inclusive system in government employment, balancing merit with the need to uplift historically disadvantaged sections of society.
